Why I Love Ljubljana, Slovenia
If you are looking for the perfect combination of European history, natural surroundings, and delicious food, all for an affordable price, Ljubljana is the perfect destination for you.
I first came to Ljubljana while I was studying on exchange in 2012 and I fell in love with the city. There are many reasons for my love, but here are the top 3:
1. The main town is entirely walkable and has no cars
2. Safety & Cleanliness
3. Bike Lanes on the Sidewalk
Where to Stay
Private Recommendation
Vila Emona – Perfectly located just outside the main town, Vila Emona was a modern, very clean, and perfect room for my friends and I to share over my birthday weekend. I haven’t slept in a room that dark in a long time.
I would 100% stay here again in the future when visiting Ljubljana.
Hostel Recommendation
Hostel Celica – Famous for being a previous prison, Hostel Celica is a fantastic hostel that has kept its history alive with modernization and art. It’s located a 10-minute walk downtown. It’s beside Metelkova, an interesting area of the city known for its autonomous social status. Breakfast is included with your stay and includes coffee, tea, fruits, eggs, and toast with various spreads.
Restaurant Recommendations
Breakfast/Brunch
Located right on the Ljubljanica river, EK Bistro is perfect for a slow brunch or breakfast. Order the french toast, but share it because it is decadent!
If ordering coffee with oat milk, the flat white gets a better milk froth than the cappuccino.

Lunch/Dinner
Enjoying typical Slovenian food, this restaurant offers great service, a cozy dining room, and a variety of dishes that will leave you feeling satisfied.
Druga violina, located in the old city centre, is a very special little gostilna-style restaurant employing several people with special needs. Order the mushroom gnocchi.

Wonderful typical Slovenian food and wine. Order the Kranjska Klobasa, Filet Postrvi (Trout), Sirovi Struklji with Mushroom Sauce, and Salad with Goat Cheese.
Sit in the Ljubljana central market, and order the Slovenian sparkling wine (dry), and a charcuterie board made with the freshest Slovenian meats and cheeses.
